"Technicolour Windmills VII"

This acrylic painting symbolises the windmills of Portugal,
in the heat of the summer.
The painting also reflects the colours of
summer as seen on brightly painted houses

LILACS AND APPLE BLOSSOM - DAY 22

September Painting Challenge - Day 22

"Lilacs and Apple Blossom,
with Ceanothus"

Today's watercolour is a bunch of flowers I picked from the garden.
Lucky for me I had photographed these for a painting when
I did, or you would not be seeing it now. The Ceanothus with it's lovely
honey scent and beautiful blue colour, and the Lilacs are both always over far too soon.
The apple blossoms were blown away sooner than we would have liked.
But here they are in all their glory!

THE VILLAGE - DAY 20

September Painting Challenge - Day 20

"The Village"

Today's painting is a real place!
A little village in South West of England that is very pretty
and peaceful
and very popular with tourists.
This view attracted me as an artist due to the great
variety of trees and plants,
and also the variety of different buildings.
The village is a painter's paradise,
I am just sorry I cannot tell you exactly where it is,
 I forgot it's name!

Yes it really is a basket weave plant pot! The 'Duck' is
also covered in moss, and contains a planted Pansy
which is in full bloom. I really enjoyed
painting this little scene today!

The Easter Island heads in the tank were also worth seeing as
well as the sharks!

SEA GARDEN - Day 2

September Painting Challenge Day 2

"Sea Garden"

For the second painting I decided to paint the scene from our aquarium at home, and added some shells instead of fish. Normally you cannot add sea shells to an aquarium as the minerals have an adverse affect on the fish... so you can only add sea shells to an aquarium in a painting..!!!

FRENCH BREAKFAST

"French Breakfast"

Shown on EBSQ painting site,
as Art of the Day Sept 7, 2015.

This painting is to mark our holidays in France, when our family explores
the countryside, slowly travelling down to the South staying
in  a different Hotel,  or Auberge, every day.
Although we often have the croissants and coffee for breakfast in England,
the Gitanes are not ours, and in the painting they serve only to note
the French penchant for strong cigarettes!

NORWEGIAN FISHING VILLAGE

my painting of a little village on the West Coast of Norway
which I painted a while ago.
I so miss the countryside of Norway with the tall trees
and prettily painted wooden houses.

BLOOMING SUMMER REVISITED

"Blooming Summer Revisited"

My latest watercolour is an homage to 'summer'
that we have been waiting for - with baited breath.
The seemingly never-ending winter is gone, and a reluctant spring
eventually saw the daffodils emerging from bud!
But when they finally bloomed we began
to sense the promise of summer.

I hope you enjoy this painting which I began
in a 'paint along' class with Johannes Vloothuis.

However, I have included much more greenery
and more flowers in my version of the painting
as this is the type of garden we are
more used to in Europe.

I think it is now  finally finished!

WEYMOUTH HARBOUR II - SOLD

"Weymouth Harbour II"

"Ferry me across the water, do boatman do!
If you've a penny in your pocket, I'll ferry you!"

A watercolour painted from a photograph, to show the
harbourside in Weymouth  about twenty or thirty years ago.
There are many more yachts in the marina these days,
but there is still a working fishing harbour and it is still very pretty.
You will find a few antique shops these days along the quay, but
you will also find some good fish and chip shops
selling freshly caught fish - wonderful!

You can also still get a ferryman to take you from one side
of the harbour to the other  in his small rowing boat, but it
will cost more than the old penny
you would have paid sixty years ago!

This beautiful place is where the
 French Impressionist Paul Gaugin
started his Art School  in the building which
is now a museum to the Impressionists.

This particular view can be seen from
a little stone bridge
in the centre of the town.
There are also many other pretty places here,
 which I continue to paint.

DANCING DAFFODILS

"Dancing Daffodils"

....to herald the Spring!

'I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.'

STONEBRIDGE

"Stonebridge"

I began this painting at the end of 2012 in an online 'paint along' class,
with Johannes Vloothuis, a great artist from Canada.

I painted it in watercolour originally but I have now reworked it and added pastel to give it texture, and the snow more depth.  I think there are a few improvements I will make including chopping ....perhaps ....a couple of inches off the bottom of the painting! This will stop the viewer's eye from being led out of the painting by following the river, and will instead draw the eye into the church which is the main focus. I have added a cropped version under the details of the painting below so you can see that it will work!

FINAL COLLAGE JANUARY 2013

 The 30 x 30 Painting Challenge

Final Collage

All the paintings I submitted to the 30 Day Challenge can be seen here and by the end of the challenge I had 19 daily paintings completed.  I found it a valuable experiment which I may well try again sometime, perhaps!  I found it a struggle to broaden my choice of subject, and try not care too much about the end result, as it was the process that was most valuable.
Most of the paintings are on this site, and the titles are as follows:

1. Lilac Trees  2. Autumn in Stratford-on-Avon  3. Dress Rehearsal
4. Deep Snow in Winter   5. Western Point   6. Venice at Dawn
   7. The Villa    8. Little Rock River Falls   9. A Study of Roses
10. Going Home   11. Midnight Blues Guitar   12. The Winner

13. Time for Tea!  14. The Wait   15. Poinsettia

16. Robin in Winter   17.  The Pink House  18. The Rose

AUTUMN IN STRATFORD UPON AVON

Day 30 of the 30 Day Painting Challenge

"Autumn in Stratford upon Avon"

Stratford-upon-Avon, home of 'the bard' - Shakespeare.
This is a small watercolour painted from an old photograph I found
during my panic to find something to paint!
I particularly like the tree on the right,
with its bending branches heavy with golden leaves.

ROBIN IN WINTER

Day 16 of 30 Day Painting Challenge

"Robin in Winter"

For today's painting I decided to paint a Robin from one of the photographs that
I had taken a while ago. I spent so long trying to get the feathers right
that I didn't have much time left for the background but finally
decided on this one with an apt wintry atmosphere! The poor Robin
is hanging onto the branch for dear life in the cold north wind
that is blowing all his feathers around!

THE BASKET

"The Basket"

A Still Life with Gourds, Onions and Pumpkin.

I missed posting for a few days on the daily painting challenge,
so instead I am posting a pastel still life which I have been working on.
I added some onions - as it is "unlucky" to have an empty basket!.
It took a while to get the composition right, but I am very pleased with the result.

THE MILL

Day 9 of 30 Day Painting Challenge

"The Mill"

Here is a pastel sketch I have done today from a watercolour painting of
Grist Mill which I painted during a paint along class
with Johannes Vloothuis.

This particular pastel sketch however is not supposed to represent Grist Mill
and is much smaller, but rather it depicts a general impression of the area
and the fast flow of the water.

THE WINNER

Day 8 of 30 Day Painting Challenge

"The Winner"

Many, many years ago when I was about 14 years old,
my Aunt asked me to paint her a picture of a horses head.

Although I tried several times I could never get it right and eventually gave up trying.
However,  I have never forgotten my promise of long ago and now I have 'finally' managed it.

This is a racehorse I named appropriately "The Winner" because I feel victorious at having finally accomplished the horses head that has long been on my 'to do' list.

By the way, I sent my Aunt the painting, and she was so delighted!  However, told me in her letter that it was such a surprise as she had no memory of asking for a painting of a horses head, and had no idea I thought she would still be waiting for one !!!
Funny, how life is, huh?

At the start a January Challenge

Well here I am at last after a few hiccups in getting this blog going!! I discovered that learning to blog is at first confusing and not so simple as you would think.

My aim here is to document my painting progress from now on, starting with a Daily Painting Challenge, which you can also follow on Leslie Saeta's blog 'Slices of Life'.

I am not sure if I will paint EVERY day...but I will give it a try and see what happens.
Although I have painted most of my life and dabbled in various mediums and genres, I hope this experiment in blogging will be enjoyable as well as enlightening, if not to anyone else then specifically for me.

The Challenge has already started, and so I arrive late but none the less enthusiastic. So let's go!
